This site is the home of images taken by Barry Turner as a volunteer photographer at various commemoration events at the National Memorial Arboretum. Photographs are also taken by Ben Moore, Luke Moore and Mary Turner at larger events. The images on this site are supplied free of charge to the National Memorial Arboretum to supplement their growing archive of major events at the NMA and to provide visual presentations for viewing by visitors at the Centre.

It is not possible to attend and photograph every event at the NMA, but I am happy to consider any requests for me to attend and photograph your organisation's N.M.A. event at no cost.

DVD slide show/video presentations can be created especially for your event. Image files can always be supplied to Regimental and other Organisations on request at no cost. Please e-mail me.

The online image galleries are freely available for viewing. This site is continually expanding with new galleries - please come back again. Your comments in our Guestbook are welcomed.

You can purchase DVD slide shows of various events and the Pictorial Guide to the National Memorial Arboretum both directly from this site and via the N.M.A. Gift Shop.

A donation is maded to the N.M.A. for every DVD sold.

'LIVING HISTORY' A new departure for The Veterans.

'Living History' is the personal stories of regulars, volunteers and conscripts from all services in all conflicts from World War Two onwards, related by them in there own words.

Many Veterans have experienced traumatic and terrifying historic events which are hard to comprehend by those of us who have not served.

As time marches on, much of this history is being lost. This project aims to record at least a few of these stories for future generations.

The very first 'Living History' project is the story of Alan Holmes - P.B.I. (Poor Bloody Infantryman).

Alan ran away from home at the age of fifteen and shortly afterwards managed to join the Sherwood Foresters after lying about his age.

His service took him to Africa where he witnessed the defeat of the Afrika Corps, then on to Salerno, Anzio and Cassino. His story is remarkable and his family were unaware of much of what he saw and did until after this project was completed.

For more information, please see below or CLICK HERE.

I hope to add at least two more Living Histories to this project over the coming months.

LIVING HISTORY - ALAN HOLMES - P.B.I.

Alan Holmes Cover

One of the many thousands of 'Poor Bloody Infantrymen' who fought in the Second World War, Alan's story is one of terror, sudden death, near misses and above all remarkable fortitude and luck.

He escaped serious injury on many occasions and says he had a 'Lucky' war.

Remarkable for its passage from training camp to Gourock then Africa and Italy, it is more so because Alan was only just sixteen when he enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters, lying about his age after running away from home when he was only fifteen.

Told in his own words via HD Video, his story is dedicated to the many thousands of soldiers, sailors and airmen who, like Alan, pushed on, persevered and gave us our freedom.

This same single-minded determination has been and is still being demonstrated by our Armed Forces every day in all of the other past and current theatres of conflict throughout the world.
