The
date the Walled Garden was built seems uncertain. All flowers to decorate
the house were grown within its walls, together with vegetables to be consumed
within the house. Seaweed was collected and dried then used to fertilise
the garden. Fruit trees, such as pears and apples, were grown against the
walls, to get the best of the sun's warmth, together with soft fruits
such as raspberries. The children of the house used to collect the fruit
to earn pocket money. Box hedging partitioned the garden into triangular
beds, and some of this survives to this day, all that remains within the
walls.
